The Latest from the Lab

It’s been over a month since the last post, so thanks for being patient, but a lot has been going on. A couple weeks ago the Graff Lab hosted an event for the folks at City Year who brought their after school class of about 20 to 30 middle schoolers from the surrounding Pico Union neighborhood to the Lab for an art pow-wow. Also we are going to delete the old unofficial facebook page, so be sure to hit us up on our new facebook fan page. We will be posting a bunch more photos on facebook in the future — more than we post here on the website — so definitely “like us” — it will be worth your while. In any event, below you will find a bunch of great new stuff from the likes of Seze, Broak, Aldo and more. Included is also a picture of the cross that Ricky and Lowanna made for Dr. Frank Ryan’s memorial in Malibu in Ventura County. Ricky went down to check on it after six months and it is still in fantastic condition.

Super Bowl Party

So as everyone knows who’s ever been to the Graff Lab, there is a radio / ghetto box blaster at the yard but no TV at the Graff Lab… until tomorrow. That’s right, Ricky Guerrero is hosting a Super Bowl party @ the Graff Lab tomorrow where there will be a TV as well as some fried chicken. So if you want to watch some football or commercials or just want to paint some walls, come on down to the Graff Lab tomorrow — February 6th — Super Bowl Sunday and enjoy! Also be sure to check out Daysi Garcia’s 2011 Levi’s Girl Contest Video. Daysi is a regular at the Graff Lab and a bunch of it was shot on location. Spread the love and help her dream come true.

2011 Graffiti

Here is some of the new graffiti that went down in our last Saturday, Jan 8th at the Graff Lab. Last weekend was the first weekend that the Graff Lab has been open in 2011 so it was pretty busy. Check out some of what went down. I have a Time Lapse that I need to post from this weekend as well. This should you over until I get a chance to edit and post it.

Michael Jackson + Akon Video

The Graff Lab’s mural of Michael Jackson, which was unveiled this past August, is featured in the video for Akon and Michael Jackson’s duet “Hold My Hand.” The Graff Lab’s MJ mural appears toward the end of the “Hold My Hand” video, so be patient — you will be rewarded. Posters and t-shirts of the MJ mural are for sale at the Graff Lab, so don’t forget to pick one up next time you are in the yard.

Principal Entertainment

Last weekend the Graff Lab welcomed Danny Sherman of Principal Entertainment. Ricky Guerrero gave Danny the official tour of the yard and our facilities, which include a silk screen t-shirt station, an arts and crafts workshop, a music room, a dance studio and a nascent boxing ring.

A big thanks goes to Sal One and Gizz for the Principal Entertainment piece. It turned out so great that Danny is going to use it for the company Christmas cards. Another thank you goes to the folks at Principal Entertainment for their generous donation. Without contributions like yours, the Graff Lab is not possible.

Principal Entertainment, originally known as Lasher, McManus, & Robinson, opened its doors in January of 1993. The company, still in the hands of Estelle Lasher, Marsha McManus and Elizabeth Robinson, has continued to develop into a well respected bi-coastal boutique talent and literary management company while adding to its diverse production slate. Partners Meg Mortimer and Larry Taube have joined Principal’s ranks. Managers within the company have expanded to include Jill Kaplan, Mike Smith, Josh Kesselman, Danny Sherman and most recently producer/manager Susana Zepeda.”

“Principal Entertainment boasts an eclectic, and highly respected international talent roster. Their literary department has an active roster of writers and directors in television, film, independent film, documentaries and reality television. Over the years, the company has developed and or produced the following partial list:

· The Last Time I Committed Suicide premiered at the Sundance Film Festival

· The Killing Yard premiered at the Toronto Film Festival

· Outreach, a one hour pilot, produced with Warner Brothers Television.

· Monster Island developed and produced for MTV Networks

· Five Fingers starring Laurence Fishburne and Ryan Phillipe

· Griffin & Phoenix premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

· Death At A Funeral directed by Frank Oz

· Off the Black premiered at the Sundance Film Festival starring Tim Hutton & Nick Nolte
